Listen in late May for an opportunity to win a beef certificate.

Members of the Mid-Iowa Youth Beef Team have a mission to educate, advocate and promote the beef industry and its producers. The team shares beef information using newsprint and social media — the team shares facts, recipes and general information relative to the beef industry on the public Mid-Iowa Youth Beef Team Facebook page and many other promotional activities.

The team advances its beef education through monthly meetings from August through May and participating in workshops, conferences and field trips. Monthly meetings generally include an industry speaker and trainings regarding beef production, nutrition and sustainability.

Regularly, team members use the educational information gleaned from these activities to compete in scholarship contests. Team members have garnered scholarships from the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation Beef Extravaganza Scholarship contest and Iowa Youth Beef Team competition. The Mid-Iowa Youth Beef Team members have also assisted the Marshall and Tama County Cattlemen with grillings and banquets.

This May, the team is conducting several activities to celebrate May Beef Month. They are partnering with Tama County Cattlemen, Marshall County Cattlemen and the Iowa Beef Industry Council Beef Check-off dollars to award beef certificates for KIX101.1 listeners that play the contest: “Beef Trivia.” Team members are also putting recipes in local businesses, look for the display stand by the meat and/or deli counter. Check out the MIYBT Facebook page for additional activities and beef production information.

MIYBT membership is free and open to youth between 12 to a senior in high school living in Iowa, currently members represent Benton, Hardin, Grundy, Marshall and Tama Counties. Interested youth should contact Julie Gray at 641-481-2134.
