The city of Medford announced plans to open a cooling shelter at the Medford library from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The library is located at 205 S. Central Ave. in downtown Medford.

Ashland will open a cooling shelter Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. at Pioneer Hall, 73 Winburn Way. Animals will be allowed but must be kept on leashes.

In addition, the Ashland Police Department will have water bottles available for people in need this weekend, and police officers will carry extra water bottles with them and look for opportunities to help people who are vulnerable to the heat. Fire station 1 will also have extra water available for people in need.

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for the next few days, with temperatures forecast to reach 103 degrees Saturday, 104 degrees Sunday and 98 degrees Monday. Temperatures will moderate to a high of 87 degrees Tuesday.

Medford City Manager Brian Sjothun issued a severe weather event declaration for Saturday and Sunday.

The city of Medford, the ACCESS social services organization and the library system are partnering to offer the Medford shelter, which will be operated by ACCESS. The shelter will provide water, restrooms, popsicles, snacks and a cooling area and water for pets.
