NEIGHBOURS rushed to wake each other as smoke poured from a supermarket in the early hours of the morning.

People stood and watched as black smoke poured from the Co-op store on Gresham Road, Dines Green, after a fridge caught fire.

The supermarket remained closed this morning with contractors and managers dealing with the aftermath of the blaze.

Residents on Gresham Road stood outside their doors as Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Crews arrived at the scene.

A resident of Gresham Road said how she was woken up by a neighbour and they rushed out to see what was happening.

She said: "My neighbour woke me up at 2am and we were stood outside watching it all unfold.

"There were three fire crews and the fire chief all here at the scene.

"All the people from the flats above were out watching it unfold as well."

This morning, the door of the shop has been kept open and a line of red and white tape can be seen in front of the door, preventing shoppers from entering.

Several shoppers could be seen walking toward the Co-op before realising the store is closed.

Three crews from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene on Gresham Road at approximately 1.31am.

The area was filled with smoke after a refrigerator caught fire, and there was fear that the smoke may have spread to flats above the shop.

A spokesperson for Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said: "We had three crews from Worcester attend the incident and on our arrival, we discovered the property was thoroughly filled with smoke.

"The fire to the refrigerator was extinguished using a standard hose reel jet.

"We checked the above properties to ensure the smoke had not spread further. There were no casualties reported at the scene."

It is unknown how long the store will remain closed.
